Guy Daniels
Guy Daniels, a Surfside Beach native collapsed on the beach while jogging in 1999. A rising sophomore at the Collage of Charleston and a Deans List student, he also served as a Life Guard and worked in a local Surf shop. Guy possessed the qualities of leadership, dedication, fortitude and kindness, all of which made him a respected member of his community and a positive mentor and role model for other youth.
Guy’s legacy and his love of surfing live on in the form of the Guy Daniels Memorial Surfoff. The two day event takes place on August 14th & 15th on 13th Ave South in Surfside Beach and this year (2010) is the 11th annual. The surf off feeds the Guy Daniels memorial fund which provides scholarships to local students based on need. The scholarships are $1000.00 each and the Board of Director’s goal is to award five scholarships each year.
Guys love for surfing transcended the sport and spilled over into a passion for keeping the beach and ocean clean and healthy. He knew that the health of the beach impacted everyone and strove to keep his community’s beach free of pollution.
All of Guy’s traits: love of surfing, academic success, community togetherness, and environmental awareness are all manifested in the spirit of the Surfoff. The Board of Directors has set several goals for 2010 including the following.
- Continue web site with surf-cam.
- Secure presenting sponsor.
- Develop strategic plan for the future including the creation of an endowment and supporting conservation projects such as our Respect the Beach project.
- Increase scholarships.
The Guy Daniels Memorial Foundation is registered with the state as charitable organization # 13644 and is a member of the S.C. association of nonprofits.
The Surfoff has become well established as an annual Grand Strand event serving as a good outreach for young boys and girls interested in surfing. Because of our emphasis on protecting the beach it sets a good example for future generations of surfers.
Thank you for your interest and support.
